Buying Organics Made Easier

Who in their right mind wouldn't want to protect their family from harmful chemicals? But if you're like many of us--working hard to make ends meet, you've noticed the organic price tag isn't comparable to its pesticide-ridden counterparts.

Here's a little relief (sigh): You can easily prioritize your organic buying! Some produce naturally doesn't need pesticide. We could be looking for the organic label (and paying for it, no less), when it's totally unnecessary. For instance, produce with layers typically removed before consuming have a God-given barrier. Think corn and onions. However, produce with thin skin should definitely be given the organic consideration. The Organic Center has created some guidelines for us worth looking at. Buy organic instead of these:

Domestically-grown Fruits:
cranberries, nectarines, peaches, strawberries, pears, apples, cherries, cantaloupe

Domestically-grown Veggies:
green beans, sweet bell peppers, celery, cucumber, potatoes, tomatoes, peas, lettuce

Imported Fruit:
grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, strawberries, cherries, cantaloupe, apples

Imported Veggies:
green beans, sweet bell peppers, celery, cucumber, tomatoes, peas, broccoli, carrots

Print a pocket-guide and slip it into your purse! Go to http://www.organic-center.org/, and click on "organic essentials." Next time you're at the market, you'll be glad you did.
